BERNE – A man was killed and three others were injured in an accident involving a chair-lift in a Swiss Kleine-Scheidegg ski area in the Bernese Oberland on Thursday.
The accident occurred at around noon, according to a spokeswoman for the mountain railway. A rope was torn, causing some of the chairs to be hurled to the ground, a spokesman for the cableway told Swiss television. The cause was not immediately clear.
A woman in her 30s was seriously injured. The identities and nationalities of the victim and those injured were not disclosed.
Winds at a speed of about 90 kilometres per hour prevailed at an altitude of 2,000 metres at the time of the accident. Strong wind also hampered the helicopter rescue effort.
