German victory gets fans rowdy

SWITZERLAND – Basel police detained 21 violent football fans after Germany’s 3-2 win over Turkey at the European Championship semi-final on Wednesday night.
The fans were taken into temporary police custody for fighting with other fans, police said Thursday, adding that there were no major incidents.
About 50,000 people followed the match in Basel’s fan zones, organizers said.
Security forces partly evacuated one of the spectators’ platforms in a fan zone shortly before the end of the match. The evacuation was prompted by reports of a suspicious noise and the loosening of a part of the platform structure, police said.
Initial checks failed to show any problem with the platform but a more thorough examination will be undertaken, police said.
