Five killed in plane crash in Swiss Alps

All five people on board a light aircraft were killed on Friday when it crashed high in the Swiss Alps, police in southwestern Switzerland said on Friday.

An army helicopter located the Swiss-registered aircraft on top of a 3,000 metre (9,842 feet) high mountain ridge above the Anniviers valley after the aircraft’s distress beacon was activated, police in the Valais region said in a statement.

“The five people on board died. The victims have not yet been identified,” it added.

Police spokesman Vincent Favre told AFP the weather was sunny and clear at the time of the crash. The plane had taken off from a stopover in the Swiss city of Lausanne on its way from Geneva, he added.
