Commandant resigns over fatal boating accident

23 June 2008

BERN – The commandant of the Swiss Air Force has resigned after at least four airmen were killed in a whitewater boating accident during a military exercise.

Two inflatable rafts overturned 12 June on the raging Kander river in central Switzerland. One airman is still missing. Another five airmen were injured, two of them seriously.

They were taking part in a “team-building” exercise of a unit assigned to securing air transport.

The Swiss Defence Department issued a statement Friday saying that Walter Knutti, a three-star general, will step down immediately because of irregularities in the promotion of the commander who organised the exercise.
