28 October 2008

LUCERNE – Swiss police say a 28-year-old British man has died in a hospital after being attacked in a popular tourist destination.

Police in the central Swiss city of Lucerne say the man died of severe head injuries on Sunday evening. His name was not given in the police statement on Monday.

Police say they have arrested a 23-year-old Chinese man and are trying to determine a motive for the attack. The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday in a Lucerne suburb.

The city is one of Switzerland’s most popular sightseeing destinations. Tens of thousands of foreign tourists visit Lucerne each year to wander the medieval streets, ride paddle steamers on the lake and take in the Alpine panorama from the top of Mount Pilatus.
