Basle steels itself for big turnout

11 June 2008

BASLE – Some 100,000 supporters, including 10,000 Turks, were expected in Basle on Wednesday for the Group A encounter between Switzerland and Turkey, organisers said Wednesday.

The city plans to erect a further screen in Place du Marche (Market Place) if the existing fan zones, which take around 35,000 people on the Rhine at the Kleinbasel Riviera and Kaserne and at Muensterplatz (Minster Square) were full. The kick off is 2045 CET.

Around 8,000 people had gathered in the fan zones Tuesday to watch Spain play Russia and Greece take on Sweden in the Austrian cities of Innsbruck and Salzburg, respectively.
