24/10/2005The Kaiser granted audience with the Pope

24 October 2005

FRANKFURT  - World Cup organising committee president, Franz Beckenbauer, has been granted an audience with Pope Benedict XVI this Wednesday, it was confirmed Monday by World Cup organisers.

"We contacted the Vatican relatively late to ask to meet the Holy Father, so we are especially happy and more grateful that he has now made this possible," said Beckenbauer.

The football legend's visit to Rome is part of his global trip, personally welcoming the 31 countries that have qualified along with automatically qualified hosts Germany for the 2006 World Cup, which takes place June 9 to July 9, 2006.

The second part of Beckenbauer's trip began Monday in Lisbon before moving to Rome, Warsaw (October 28) and Kiev (October 31).

Beckenbauer, who has already been to Tehran, Riyadh, Seoul and Tokyo, hopes to have visited all 31 countries by February 2006.
