21/09/2004Terror pilot cousin to testifyat Hamburg 9/11 trial

21 September 2004

HAMBURG - The re-trial of Mounir al-Motassadeq, the only person ever convicted of a role in the 11 September 2001 attacks, resumed Tuesday after a one-week recess with testimony expected from a relative of one of the suicide pilots.

The witness is a second cousin of Ziad Jarrah, a Lebanese suspected of piloting United Airlines flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania killing all aboard.

Motassadeq was convicted at his first trial of assisting in 3,000 murders and being a member of the Hamburg terrorist cell that included Jarrah. He was sent to prison for 15 years. Appeal judges ordered the case to be reheard and he was released.
