07/08/2006Rolling Stones ruin German football club's turf

7 August 2006

STUTTGART - The Rolling Stones might remain one of the most popular bands in the world, but officials at German Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart are not singing their praises at the moment.

The turf of the Gottlieb-Daimler stadium was ruined during a concert the aging rockers gave in the city on Friday, team manager Horst Heldt said on Monday.

"The condition of the lawn is a catastrophe. Our worst fears have materialized," he said.

Stuttgart is opening their season at home against Nuremberg on Saturday and the entire turf in one of the penalty areas has to be replaced as no grass will grow there after the huge stage has been taken down.

The rest of the pitch has also taken a beating due to holes in the cover.

"A week before our start we have such poor conditions. No other Bundesliga city has to deal with such issues. We are the main tenants in the stadium and we now have the problems," Heldt said.
