03/01/2006Pope to make first Poland visit in May: report

3 January 2006

WARSAW - Pope Benedict XVI will pay his first visit to Poland May 25-28, Poland's leading commercial RMF radio reported Tuesday, quoting unnamed Roman Catholic Church sources.

The German-born successor of the late Polish Pope John Paul II is expected to begin his visit in the capital Warsaw. He is then due to travel to Poland's most venerated shrine to the Virgin Mary in Czestochowa.

Pope Benedict XVI is also expected to pay an historic visit the former Nazi German death camp Auschwitz located in the southern Polish town of Oswiecim. His final stop will be in nearby Krakow, where Karol Wojtyla served as a priest, bishop and cardinal prior to being elected pope in 1978.

Pope Benedict XVI would then return to Rome from Krakow on May 28.

Krakow Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz commented late last year that Pope Benedict's visit would likely take place in May in order to avoid any overlap with the World Cup football competition due to kick-off in neighbouring Germany on June 9.
