BRUSSELS - More than 100 Spanish griffon vultures made a rare trek north into Belgium looking for food they can no longer find in the Pyrenees mountain range, bird experts said Monday.
The vultures came over because carcasses of dead cattle are no longer allowed to remain in the mountains there as a precaution to contain diseases, said Dominque Verbelen, of environmental group Natuurpunt.
About 100 vultures settled in an area close to Ghent, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Brussels on Sunday, but it was unlikely they would find sufficient food to survive. Some were already flying on to the Netherlands.
''They roam around looking for food. They are hungry,'' Verbelen said.
Dozens of bird-watchers came to the area to witness the rare sighting.
