20/06/2007Most griffon vultures have departed

20 June 2007

UTRECHT – The griffon vultures which were in the Netherlands in search of food over the past few days seem all to have started their return trip to the Spanish Pyrenees.

"There are still a few birds flying above the Netherlands, but the large groups have all departed," said a spokesperson for the Netherlands' Bird Protection Agency.

The organisation received reports on Wednesday that the vultures had been spotted above Zoetermeer and Apeldoorn. "There is one still perched in a tree near Oss. The veterinary service is on hand if it should fall," the spokesperson said.

The birds flew north to Belgium and the Netherlands in search of food. Some may have been weak from the journey and lack of sustenance.
