VEENENDAAL – Seven in ten of the Dutch take offence at other people swearing. Nine in ten sometimes make a remark when others in their presence use swearwords cursing God.
This emerged from a survey conducted by TNS NIPO conducted among 1,175 Dutch persons. The survey was commissioned by the 90-year old League against Blasphemy and Swearing (Bond tegen het vloeken)
Although many Dutch take offence when people use bad language, 47 percent occasionally do use swearwords themselves. Twenty-five percent of the respondents indicated that in their circles people hardly ever use swearwords or don’t swear at all. Earlier surveys carried out in 1995 and 2000 showed that the percentages were then 35 and 36 percent respectively. Young people definitely swear more than older people.
