04/08/2006Lebanese packaging found in train bombs: report

4 August 2006

KARLSRUHE, GERMANY - German investigators declined Friday to discuss a news report that packaging from Lebanon was found in two bombs that were planted four days earlier on German railway trains.

A federal prosecutions spokesman, Ullrich Schultheis, said, "When assessing supposed or genuine clues, it has to be remembered that they might have been put there to mislead the investigation."

He said individual facts could distort the overall picture.

The mysterious bombs, which had not exploded, were concealed in suitcases and left Monday on two regional trains that pass through Cologne. Police say the bomber could have been a terrorist or an extortionist.

The newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported Friday that a plastic bag with Arabic script and a Beirut address was found in one bag.

The discovery has made travellers in Germany jittery and led to calls for more closed-circuit-television monitoring of stations.
