13/06/2008Rembrandt famous in 17th century Italy

The Dutch artist was a celebrated figure in Italy and not unknown as formally believed.

13 June 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Newly discovered documents reveal new insights into Rembrandt's last years and show that he was a celebrated artist in Italy.

Up until now, it was accepted that Rembrandt enjoyed little fame in Italy during his lifetime.

Letters retrieved from the archives of a well-established family in Genoa prove that Rembrandt was commissioned to produce paintings to adorn altarpieces three metres high, just three years before his death.

Apparently, there were several price negotiations before Rembrandt finally produced preliminary sketches for the altarpieces. These were shipped to Genoa, although it is not known if they ever arrived. The letters of the Genoese family indicate that Rembrandt actively sought commissioned work in Italy.
