Berlin -- Curvy women have no place on the catwalk, iconic German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was quoted as saying Sunday, after a magazine said it was banning skinny models in favour of "real women."
"No one wants to see curvy women," Lagerfeld was quoted as saying on the website of news magazine Focus.
"You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," he added.
The world of fashion is about "dreams and illusions," he said, dismissing as "absurd" the debate prompted by Brigitte magazine which said it would no longer feature professional models on its pages.
Brigitte, one of Germany's top women's magazines, said last week it would only publish photographs of "real women" after readers complained they could not identify with the models depicted.

As a middle aged man who grew up ogling Cindy Crawford, the women they are putting up as models now cause me intense discomfort with their distorted bodies. It's not sexy at all to a heterosexual male.

All the girls I\'ve dated are nearly as skinny as supermodels...(and some were models) We work hard to look the way we do. Get off your fat asses and do something about it. Anorexic is not healthy, and many of these women do not live healthy fit lifestyles. They starve themselves, suffer from bulimia and other eating disorders. I don\'t think that a size 8 or 10 woman that is 5\'10\" or 6ft tall as most runway models are could under any circumstances be considered fat. But that same height woman as a size 0 or size 2 is down right unhealthy. They all need to put down the ciggies and eat a sammich hold the mayo!
Models are not curvy girls, the look like a ten year old boy who stuffed his sisters bra with socks. it wrong in any society to crave girls that look like that, it usually called pedophilia. What is wrong with seeing skinny models? I would think if a large woman sees a model in a magazine, it might prompt her to get off her lazy bum, do some running and crunches, and maybe achieve something close to what she would see in a magazine. I'm not saying anorexic is pretty, but being fit is. Live up to your potential as a healthy human being, and men will find you attractive. Sit on your bum and complain all the time about how fat you are, and no man will want you.
Most men honestly don't want, or at least don't want to stay with, a woman who is high maintenance. They do want to stay with someone who takes care of herself.
You\'re talking about a world where the magazines say the clothes are too small for the models to fit into. And the models are emaciated already, they don\'t need to get any smaller.
We don\'t need to convince you that plus size women can be great. Athletic girls and natural, healthy thin women are great too, and if that\'s what you prefer, great. But what we\'re seeing on the runways now is distorted and gross, and it\'s far from natural. The incidence of body image disorders, bulimia (mmm.. sexy), and out-right digital image modification should tell you we\'re not just talking about being fit and healthy.
My personal preference is for real women with curvy, voluptuous bodies. But to each his own. The real issue here is women's health and thwe self-esteem of young girls and women who can develop an unrealistic view of themselves and what they think of as beautiful. The media is about illusion. Want the reality? Go out into your community and watch people, see how many people of all sizes and shapes are walking hand in hand with someone who loves them for who they are. I would love my wife no more or less if she lost or gained any weight.

The reason the designers use models so thin and androgynous is because 99% of them are GAY MEN and like their clothes on models that looks like pretty boys. Curves spoil that illusion.
As hard as it is for me to understand, the economics here is simple: the models are presenting clothing to bought by buyers for stores that cater to women. Can it be that the women modeling are not the main feature for the people who buy clothing to be resold to women?
Why can't most men figure this out? It is NOT, after all, all about US.

The fashion industry sucks. Women have curves naturally and it takes a lot of starvation to get rail thin like that. Women like Claudia Schiffer and Laetitia Casta are much more feminine and healthy looking. These stick figures they use today are gross.

As I write this, I'm fat. No denying it - I was on my way to the medical definition of "morbidly obese". I started losing the weight a month ago, after getting the rest of my health problems under sufficient control to undertake this. I've lost almost 15 lbs already, of roughly 100 I'd love to shed. I'd be happy to lose only 75, because that'd still be a drastic improvement in my overall health.
There's a wide range of womanhood, from my shape and beyond on down to model thin - tall, short, and a range of figures available. What disgusts me is the idea that there is ONE feminine ideal, and that any failure to conform to that equates to a lifetime spent on the sofa, with one's cats arrayed around, eating ice cream and potato chips, reading romance novels to satisfy yearnings that no man could ever be interested in fulfilling for a less than ideal figure.
I am fat, yes. I ate too much, watched too much TV. Sure. I also work way too hard at my office job, and spent four years being a single mom, attending a top-flight school full time, to attain a degree in Physics, all while working almost full-time. I'm a community volunteer, an active gardener, a GED tutor, medical research worker, mother and lately a wife again (he met me fat, married me fatter, and loves whatever size I'll eventually be). Go ahead - call me lazy. I promise I'll be too busy to take notice and too happy to care.
I want to see ordinary women because fashion ought to be about clothing normal people attractively. Normal isn't one size or one shape - it's a range. It also includes some people who are heavier than their ideal weight. Not saying we have to include people as heavy as I am, only that fashionistas should show women who can rock a size 12 as much as a size 2.
My only contribution to this dialogue is this observation: when women deem themselves average here in the US of A nowadays, it is 15-20 pounds heavier than what women called average twenty years ago. The more tolerant and accepting of this trend toward obesity will only result in more outrage over models. My experience in having jumped back into the dating pool after a divorce is if a woman calls herself average, nine times out of ten, she's fat. Obviously average is a moving target, just as sizes are for women. They should just go to actual inches like they do with men's clothing, because these ridiculous size numbers are largely meaningless. I've seen incredibly hot size 14s and obese size 10s. At any rate no need to take it out on the models. Most of these models are actually quite healthy(horror stories being the extreme and usually exaggerated), they just have a body type that makes it easy for them to look like that.
I think we have some confusion here due to using euphemisms for "farking fat." "Curves" does not mean fat. The belly is not one of the curves. We are talking about large breasts and nice ass but physically fit. Fat people should be known as "fat."

The fact is, none of these designers can make clothes that look good on a curvy or rather, not hanger-like, female body. Their own design talent shortcomings and fear that their creations would end up looking lumpy and frumpy is what keeps these models so ghastly thin. The whole system needs to be upended, to begin with the basics of how to draw a woman\'s shape and have it not resemble a man\'s physique, to learn to play upon a woman\'s natural curves and waistlines.
Then we have a separate societal issue where gay men ruled the print/fashion world for so long, that\'s all these boys under 30 grew up looking at: super skinny little boy-looking women-waifs, so their idea of beauty is as twisted as their sisters\'. So now we have these little hipsters running around on adderall and cigs to stay thin. Poor things. Most of them will end up meth heads, bulimic/anorexic, or obese when they are no longer able to score the adderall.

Firstly, when a woman on a dating site calls herself average, yes, she will probably be a tad bit larger than average. Women and men both have a slight tendency to choose the most favorable term they can stretch far enough to fit. That has nothing whatever to do with how heavy they actually think they are.
That said, I don't think that the notion of average has gotten larger over time. If anything, I think it's the opposite. My mom was considered pretty average at a size 12/14 (5'9" tall) when I was a kid. Today, my sister (built like mom) feels a need to get back to a size 8/10. It's possible these are actually the same basic measurements. It's probably not a bigger set of measurements. And, I should add, my sister has a fairly realistic body image, by modern standards. She isn't looking to be a model - just "average", using a medical definition of ideal body weight.
Using my ideal body weight as a guide (which is what I'm targeting), I'd be around a size 12/14 - just like mom was. I'm an inch taller - no more. Maybe my definitions of average and ideal are more or less identical, and maybe that's a bit odd, but that is how I tend to see it.
I just shared this debate with my husband. Sorry for the double-post, but his comment was spot on. He said, in response to Lagerfeld's comment, to tell what people like to look at "one only has to look at men's magazines versus women's magazines". Actually, though, fashion mags aside, even the women's magazine figures are more natural, generally.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - one persons' pretty/handsome is somebody's oogly. And that's OK! Diversity is what makes this such an interesting world. Let the fashion industry do what it wants, see it for what it is, and teach your children (of both sexes!) to do the same. Once kids realize the industry wants all women to look like makeup-wearing teenagers in their gangley growth-spurt years, they'll be a step ahead of everyone else, and can make up their own minds on what they see as beauty.
The skinny models are even less attractive in person. They are bad enough on stage or in magazines. When you see them face to face without all the make-up and their goofy runway walk they are frightening to look at. They should try to get an education and get a real job.

What this whole debate forgets, is that there are naturally skinny women as well, and they are just as 'real' as the curvy ones. This term 'real women' to describe women with curves (and most of the time some plumpness) is somehow implying that if you're skinny, you're not real, you must have been made up (or probably don't even exist).
I come from a family of naturally thin women. I wear size 0/2 US (6 UK), never been on a diet in my life, not anorexic/bulimic in any way, I had a child. I'm just thin. I have noticed in the last few years that the high street fashion industry has inflated their clothes sizing to somehow appease the more average sizes. Clothes sizes of the same brand that I fit me perfectly a few years before are now somehow bigger even though the label size stays the same (I used to be able to fit into their XS, now even that is too big for me). As a result it's getting increasingly difficult for me to find anything that fits me well.
I am not agreeing with Karl Lagerfeld, but at the same time I am very wary of this 'real women' jargon. Real women also comes in all kind of shapes and sizes, and yes, those stick insect models are also real women.

Firstly, when a woman on a dating site calls herself average, yes, she will probably be a tad bit larger than average. Women and men both have a slight tendency to choose the most favorable term they can stretch far enough to fit. That has nothing whatever to do with how heavy they actually think they are.
That said, I don't think that the notion of average has gotten larger over time. If anything, I think it's the opposite. My mom was considered pretty average at a size 12/14 (5'9" tall) when I was a kid. Today, my sister (built like mom) feels a need to get back to a size 8/10. It's possible these are actually the same basic measurements. It's probably not a bigger set of measurements. And, I should add, my sister has a fairly realistic body image, by modern standards. She isn't looking to be a model - just "average", using a medical definition of ideal body weight.
Using my ideal body weight as a guide (which is what I'm targeting), I'd be around a size 12/14 - just like mom was. I'm an inch taller - no more. Maybe my definitions of average and ideal are more or less identical, and maybe that's a bit odd, but that is how I tend to see it.
I just shared this debate with my husband. Sorry for the double-post, but his comment was spot on. He said, in response to Lagerfeld's comment, to tell what people like to look at "one only has to look at men's magazines versus women's magazines". Actually, though, fashion mags aside, even the women's magazine figures are more natural, generally.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - one persons' pretty/handsome is somebody's oogly. And that's OK! Diversity is what makes this such an interesting world. Let the fashion industry do what it wants, see it for what it is, and teach your children (of both sexes!) to do the same. Once kids realize the industry wants all women to look like makeup-wearing teenagers in their gangley growth-spurt years, they'll be a step ahead of everyone else, and can make up their own minds on what they see as beauty.
The skinny models are even less attractive in person. They are bad enough on stage or in magazines. When you see them face to face without all the make-up and their goofy runway walk they are frightening to look at. They should try to get an education and get a real job.
Waaaah, teh poor poor menz! Why won't the women change their bodies to suit teh menz?!

What this whole debate forgets, is that there are naturally skinny women as well, and they are just as 'real' as the curvy ones. This term 'real women' to describe women with curves (and most of the time some plumpness) is somehow implying that if you're skinny, you're not real, you must have been made up (or probably don't even exist).
I come from a family of naturally thin women. I wear size 0/2 US (6 UK), never been on a diet in my life, not anorexic/bulimic in any way, I had a child. I'm just thin. I have noticed in the last few years that the high street fashion industry has inflated their clothes sizing to somehow appease the more average sizes. Clothes sizes of the same brand that I fit me perfectly a few years before are now somehow bigger even though the label size stays the same (I used to be able to fit into their XS, now even that is too big for me). As a result it's getting increasingly difficult for me to find anything that fits me well.
I am not agreeing with Karl Lagerfeld, but at the same time I am very wary of this 'real women' jargon. Real women also comes in all kind of shapes and sizes, and yes, those stick insect models are also real women.

MOST designers of woman's clothes are homosexuals.
Their choice of using overly thin, 'flat-appearing' models meshes with their warped idea of whom real women should resemble; as young wimpy-looking 'boys'.
Karl Largerfeld is GAY, of course he is repulsed by women with curves because as a gay man, thin and boyish are what turns him on. I am not surprised that normal women cannot connect with the looks of most models because they all look like David Bowie in the 1970\\\'s....I am a gay man and when I see some of the wimpy things hanging around bars...well it is quite depressing how much they all look like they have just come of a Karl Lagerfeld catwalk....a real turn off.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lagerfeld is a member of a child porn/snuff ring, as they are extremely popular among freaks like him. Lagerfeld looks like a syphilitic old whore with too much botox. Lagerfeld's fashions look like something designed by a tacky, cheesy, suburban housewife who watches reruns on Dynasty all day. Lagerfeld and his employees are a bunch of misogynist gays who probably enjoy little boys and none other. Lagerfeld looks like a crazy-ass child-molester, child-murderer. Take a bow, Mr. Lagerfeld. You know where the fashion designers get their money from? Drug sales and child trafficking, I'll bet. Lagerfeld probably doesn't need to sell the shit he makes. Cause he's probably a big time behind the scenes black-market operator. The sick-looking fuck. Somebody ought to investigate his saggy ass.
In my personal opinion, I feel that the runway models look like sickly walking skeletons. Also, the clothing featured looks so goofy, that I've never seen any person in real life wearing anything like it. So I'm not interested in these shows. I understand that the extremely small and extremely large are all "real women" too. What they probably should have said was "average woman". The average woman is somewhere in between. I would be much more interested if I could see fit, attractive, average size women up on stage.
