THE NETHERLANDS -- Rabbit owners can now insure their pets against illness as Petplan becomes the first health insurance company in the Netherlands to offer a policy for rabbits.

The animals are becoming more popular as domestic pets with more than 750,000 of them in the country today.

In all, Dutch households are home to six million cats, dogs and rabbits, of which less than two percent are insured against illness. Despite this low figure, the Dutch health insurance market for pets is growing rapidly, at around 15 percent per year.
