21/10/2009German cleaners strike for minimum wage

The strike is aimed mainly at office buildings, administrations and aircraft, while a minimum service is to be maintained in hospital emergency rooms.

Berlin -- Staff at German cleaning companies launched an open-ended strike on Tuesday to press for a minimum wage.

The movement was kicked off by the IG BAU union in the eastern city of Magdeburg and should spread across the country in the coming days, a union spokesman said.

A minimum wage is demanded for 860,000 workers in the sector as a previous agreement that set their salary at 6.58 euros (9.9 dollars) an hour expired on October 1 without a new union-management agreement.

Labour representatives have called for a general increase of 8.7 percent while management counterparts have offered between two and three percent depending on the region.

The strike is aimed mainly at office buildings, administrations and aircraft, while a minimum service is to be maintained in hospital emergency rooms.
