02/02/2009Berlin unimpressed by Sri Lankan 'threats' to ambassador

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse said that there would be "dire consequences" for any foreign non-governmental organisation, diplomat or correspondent attempting to give "terrorists a second breath of life."

Berlin -- Berlin made it clear on Sunday that it was unimpressed by "threats" from Sri Lanka's top defence official to expel Germany's ambassador and other foreigners seen as supportive of Tamil rebels.

"Possible misunderstandings should be resolved through dialogue, not through threats," a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry in Berlin said.

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse told the Sunday Island that there would be "dire consequences" for any foreign non-governmental organisation, diplomat or correspondent attempting to give "terrorists a second breath of life."

Rajapakse is leading the government's crackdown against the Tamil Tigers who lost their mini state last month in the face of a military offensive that has pushed the rebels back to a narrow strip of land.

"Rajapakse did not mince his words when he said that some ambassadors, especially the German and Swiss ambassadors, and some news agencies were behaving irresponsibly," the newspaper said.

German ambassador Jurgen Weerth was recently summoned by the foreign ministry over remarks he made at the funeral of a newspaper editor and outspoken government critic who was killed by unidentified gunmen.

german ambassador is supporting terrorists, why cant he express symathy with thousands of muslim civillians killed in gaza, afghanistan and iraq, typical double standards by west when it come to terrorism

If anyone tell the truth, Srilankan government always cry and paint them as terrorists. Diplomat does not worry about these kind of threat and they should report their own country what really happened in Srilanka.

I agree with Vara Pillai. The journalists know the past history. They are not fool. The time is not too far for Sri Lanka to come out of it's real face. All are lies to International communities. Some countries know the truth. But they pretent not knowing it. Shame on them.

The Singhalese think that they can push the Swiss and German ambassador's around like they do to innocent Tamil civilians and Journalists doing their job like the killing of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickramatunga and as well as the recent threats against BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera journalists. They are mistaken.

The Sri Lankan government in recent times has named the following organizations "terrorists": The Human Right Watch, Amnesty International, Red Cross, BBC, CNN, German Foreign Ministry, Swiss Foreign Ministry and of course the LTTE. I have to say that the LTTE is in an elite group. The international players should take a note!

Who is an Ambassador ? He is the official representative in any country by the government to serve official duties for his own country. He is also there to build a friendly atmosphere between the two countries. The host country permits them to manage a special region called the embassy. The staff and other facilities are provided by the host country to the ambassador.

They should stay away from the internal affairs of the host country and not act like viceroys. Sri Lanka in a Sovereign Independent State

Defence Secretary is absolutely right. German ambassador any one should not cry foul for terrorists when they are getting cornered...

Gota was correct but I would say that his language was not diplomatic. Instead of a threat a warning shold have been sufficient requesting ambassadors generally not to get involved in this internal matter. Yes,at this last stage when the LTTE human shield is the stumbling block we do not want a cease fire and negotiate with a losing dictator.

The racist nature of the Sinhalese majority made the minority no choice but to take up arms. The Sinhalese mentality of Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese only and the minority Tamils and Muslims should live under them fuelling this South Asia’s longest running arms struggle. It is evident that anyone telling the truth will be labelled as sympathisers of LTTE or terrorist by the Sri Lankan Government. The war against the terror adapted by the former Bush administration has helped Sinhala majority government to crush the minority's struggle to live with equal rights and dignity. The Sinhala politicians who want to be in the power systematically made these culturally different two races within the country to hate each other. Some extend through false propaganda Sinhalese government succeeded in telling the outside world that there is no ethnic issue within Sri Lanka it is only the Tamil terrorism we are dealing with. The sad fact is some elements of outside world also helping the genocide of Tamils for their own economic and political interest. Therefore the western governments should impose isolation and economic sanction against Sri Lanka and this will be the only way to force this rouge government to stop this genocide of Tamils.

Sri Lanka is one of 8 'red alert' countries in the world practicing genocide, says 2008 US based NGO Report. It is on the ineternet. Nothing can be worse for minorities, mainly Tamils.Genocidal crimes ough tto be thoroughly investuagetd by the UN/ICC to bring all those suspected of such crimes to justice in an International Court or Tribunal as done in teh case of Kosovo,Rwanda and East Timor. Justice, not callous impunity, is the real need of the hour.

Who cares what US says! Yes, some do just follow what the US says blindly. Like when the US said march, they marched in to Irag and now bogged down. The US thinks in their terms which is not the way the others think.
