09/09/2010Son wants "Ceausescu" trademark to be protected

The son of former Romanian communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu has sued a theatre for performing a play on his late parents, arguing he wants the "Ceausescu" trademark to be protected.

"We want the 'Ceausescu' trademark, registered in 2007, to be protected," Valentin Ceausescu's attorney, Haralambie Voicilas, told AFP at the opening of the trial before a Bucharest court Thursday.

"Nobody is entitled to use this trademark for a profit without the owner's consent."

Called "The Last Hours of Ceausescu", the docu-play was written by Milo Rau of the International Institute of Political Murder (IIPM) based in Berlin and Zurich.

After two shows in Bucharest last December, it was performed in Germany and Switzerland.

Voicilas said Valentin Ceausescu and his brother-in-law did not plan to sue the foreign theatres too.

"My clients are seeking damages worth one leu (about 0.25 euros). They are not after money but simply want the law to be observed," he added.

The theatre's attorney Alexandru Ulmeanu said he planned to contest the registration of this trademark, which he blasted as an "abuse".

"If the court rules in favour of the plaintiff it could create a dangerous precedent," he said.

The next hearing is due on November 4.

Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu were executed by a firing squad on December 25, 1989, following a brief trial. His communist regime was the last to crumble in Eastern Europe in 1989.
