07/11/2008Union seeks job protection for contract workers

Largest Dutch trade union wants temporary unemployment benefits for workers who have just started at their new jobs.

7 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - FNV Bondgenoten, the Netherlands' largest trade union federation, has called on the cabinet to introduce measures to safeguard employment as the economy slows down.

The union wants temporary unemployment benefits for workers who are laid off.

Citing car manufacturer Nedcar as an example, FNV Bondgenoten fears that the 500 new workers who has just been hired earlier this year may lose their jobs because of the economic crisis.

The union feels staff on short-term contracts and temporary workers should also be able to apply for temporary unemployment benefits.

Dutch laws state that if you lose your job, you may claim unemployment benefit only if you have worked at the company for more than half a year. Other conditions attached to claiming unemployment benefit also make it harder for short-term workers to qualify for unemployment benefits.
