26/06/2009Spanish parliament calls for end to Iranian 'repression'

The Spanish parliament on Thursday called on Iranian authorities to release opposition activists and "end the repression against the civilian population."

Madrid--"The congress of deputies calls for the immediate release of the opponents of the regime who have been arrested," the parliament said in a resolution.

It also "asks the Iranian government to end the repression against the civilian population, and refrain from blaming foreign countries for its internal problems."

Tensions have been rising between Iran and the West over the Islamic regime's suppression of mass street protests sparked by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's contested re-election on June 12.

"The peaceful demonstrations by suppporters of the defeated candidates have been severely repressed while violent intimidation by the supporters of the theoretical victor have been permitted," the Spanish resolution said.

The deputies said that "while respecting Iran's sovereignty", they urge Iranian authorities to "open an investigation that guarantees the transparency of the electoral process and the legitimacy of the results."
