27/06/2009East Germans still pine for old communist regime

A new poll shows the majority of eastern Germans think the DDR had ‘more good sides than bad sides.’

Berlin -- Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, most eastern Germans believe that the ex-communist DDR regime did more good than harm, a survey released on Friday showed.

The poll, conducted by Emnid for the German government and published in the Berliner Zeitung daily, said that 49 percent of east Germans thought the DDR had "more good sides than bad sides."

In contrast, less than a third (32 percent) of easterners think the Communist regime had "more bad sides than good."

And nearly one in 10 (eight percent) of people said they agreed with the statement: "The DDR had overwhelmingly positive sides. We were happier and lived better then than we are today in the reunified Germany."

A government report published earlier in June showed that despite efforts to iron out economic differences between the former Communist east and the capitalist west, unemployment is still twice as high in the east.
