04/07/2007Israel, Morocco hold rare official meeting in Paris

PARIS, July 4, 2007 (AFP) - Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met Wednesday in Paris with her Moroccan counterpart, in the first official meeting between the diplomatic chiefs in years, an Israeli official said.

Morocco broke off diplomatic relations with Israel after the outbreak of Palestinian-Israeli fighting in 2000.

In Rabat, a Moroccan official earlier said that Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa would discuss prospects for advancing the Middle East peace process.

The "meeting aims to energize the Arab peace initiative and ensure the Jewish state's political and economic commitments to the Palestinian people get carried out," the official told AFP.

The Israeli diplomat confirmed that the talks would touch on the peace process and said a news conference was scheduled for later in the day.

Livni was due to meet with President Nicolas Sarkozy later in the day and hold a working lunch with Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.
