12/01/2009French fault justice minister for going back to work

A poll shows that more than 50 percent of French think Rachida Dati was wrong to go back after a five-day maternity break.

PARIS – Fifty-four percent of French people think Justice Minister Rachida Dati was wrong to go back to work five days after she gave birth, an opinion poll to be published on Sunday suggests.

Sixty percent of women, and 51 percent of men, who responded to the Ifop poll for the Journal du Dimanche newspaper faulted the first-time single mother, 43, for not taking a statutory 16-week paid maternity leave.

Thirty-three percent of all 1,014 respondents - contacted by telephone on Thursday and Friday - said she was right to do so, however, while nine percent felt it was her business what to do.

Smiling in a black suit and high heels, Dati strutted into a cabinet meeting chaired by President Nicolas Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday - the same day she walked out of a Paris clinic clutching Zohra, her new daughter.

Zohra was delivered by caesarean birth on 2 January and Dati - who has not disclosed who the father is - insisted on her first day back at work that she was feeling fine.

In doing so, however, Dati triggered a national debate, with some feminists saying her decision would be a green light to employers to pressure women to get back to work soon after giving birth.
