About 200 people were evacuated from a beach on southern France after a swimmer spotted a WWII mine in shallow waters.

DRAGUINAN - About 200 people were evacuated from a beach in the south of France on Sunday after the discovery of an anti-tank mine dating back to the Second World War, police said.

Holidaymakers were told to leave the beach at La Londe-Les-Maures near Toulon on the French Riviera after a swimmer spotted the mine in shallow waters about 40 metres from the shore and raised the alarm.

The area was cordoned off and de-miners exploded the device around 4:00 pm.
