A historic high of 64,250 inmates are occupying France’s overcrowded prisons, official figures show.

PARIS - The number of people in France's overcrowded prisons hit a historic high of 64,250 on 1 July, official figures showed Tuesday.

The latest figures for the number of places in the country's 200 jails have not been released, but last month there were just over 50,000 available spots.

June's figures showed that nearly two thirds of prisons here were overcrowded, with seven percent of these holding two prisoners for every one place.

France's prisons used to get some relief every 14 July when the president traditionally issued a collective pardon for prisoners with just a short time left to serve.

But President Nicolas Sarkozy decided when he came to power to put an end what he called a "quasi-monarchical" right.
