STRASBOURG - A stained glass window by Russian-born French artist Marc Chagall has been broken during a break-in at the cathedral in the French city of Metz, said a Church official Tuesday.

The window, depicting Eve holding an apple representing original sin, was damaged overnight Saturday Sunday when a hole was made in it in order to gain access to the cathedral in northeastern France.

A number of items of little value were taken but the window, completed in 1963, was left with a hole of around 65 by 35 centimetres, said canon Victor Scheidt.

Some sculptures were also broken during the break-in, he added.

The stolen items included around 30 medals and rings worth between EUR 3 and 10 from the cathedral shop and two brass crowns from a statue of Mary and the baby Jesus.

"Happily, everything of value in the cathedral is locked up," added Scheidt.

Chagall died in 1985.
