A French photographer was fatally stabbed during a robbery in Buenos Aires Wednesday, apparently by someone who tried to steal his camera, said police, who were holding a 20-year old suspect in the crime.

The 42-year-old Frenchman, identified by authorities as Laurent Schwebel, was killed when he apparently resisted the robbery, officials said.

At the time of his slaying, Schwebel had been taking pictures of a monument honoring victims of Argentina's 1982 war with Britain for control of the Malvinas Islands, also known as the Falklands.

It was not immediately known if the Frenchman was a tourist in the Argentine capital or if he was a resident here, or whether he was working in a professional capacity at the time of his death.

Police did not release additional details about the 20-year old suspect, who was detained a short time after the crime.
