Nearly-all administrative offices and non-manufacturing facilities in France will be closed from 19 December to 4 January.

PARIS – French car maker Renault plans to close nearly all of its administrative offices and non-manufacturing facilities in France at the end of the year for two weeks, a senior executive said Tuesday.

Production at factories will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, Human Resources Director Gerard Leclercq told AFP, but "nearly all" non-manufacturing sites will be closed from 19 December to 4 January.

"We are trying to go as far as possible to delay the moment when we can not do anything except resort to unemployment measures," he said, adding that the company might be forced into job cuts if the market worsened.

Temporary layoffs have been instituted at a factory in Sandouville, northern France, and similar measures are expected in December at sites in Cleon and Le Mans, also in northern France.

Renault will oblige office and non-production staff to take holiday during the festive period, Leclercq explained, adding that Renault faced rapidly declining sales in western Europe.

The company produces a million cars annually in France but has sold only 600,000 in the market so far this year, he said.
