A 40-strong group broke into the Brodard Graphique site in Coulommiers shortly after midnight and used fire hoses to soak copies of the Direct Matin daily.

Paris – A raid by union militants on a printing works east of Paris on Wednesday destroyed 150,000 copies of a free newspaper, a police source said.

A 40-strong group broke into the Brodard Graphique site in Coulommiers, around 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of the French capital, shortly after midnight and used fire hoses to soak copies of the Direct Matin daily, the source said.

Militants from the Livre trade union opposed to Brodard Graphique printing the newspaper are thought to be behind the attack, according to a source close to the case.

Police said shortly after the incident, two delivery lorries loaded with copies of the newspaper had their tyres burst.

"The copies which were destroyed have been reprinted and distributed," a spokesman for Groupe Bollore, the Direct Matin publisher, said.

The newspaper, which has a circulation of 450,000 in the Paris region, was handed out in all its usual distribution areas, the spokesman added.

Brodard Graphique began producing the newspaper on Tuesday, after Groupe Bollore ended its contract with another printer.

The Brodard Graphique management said they had lodged a complaint with the police for trespass and criminal damage.
