08/08/2009Iran tries French lecturer for espionage

A French citizen and an Iranian employee of the French embassy in Tehran have gone on trial in Iran on charges of espionage and inciting violence.

Tehran - Detained French lecturer Clotilde Reiss was in the dock with Iranian protesters being tried in Tehran on Saturday for opposing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, official media said.

The 23-year old French woman was arrested at Tehran airport on 1 July as she was returning to France.

"She is accused of collecting information and provoking rioters," the official IRNA news agency reported, adding that a female Iranian employee of the French embassy, was also in the dock.

France has demanded her immediate release, saying she is innocent.

Some 100 reformists went on trial last week in connection with the unrest following June's disputed presidential elections.
