27/04/2009French swine flu trio test negative

A family of three have been tested clear for swine flu a disease that has claimed 81 lives in America.

PARIS – Three people out of four tested for swine flu in France were on Sunday given the all-clear by doctors, but one woman in the Paris region is still suspected of having contracted the virus, officials said.

All four had recently returned from the Americas, where an outbreak of the disease has claimed up to 81 lives, but the trio -- members of the same family living near the northern city of Lille -- each tested "negative," said a spokesman for Lille prefecture.

A couple aged 47 and 50 and their 25-year-old son were being sent home on Sunday evening.

Doctors took samples on Sunday morning after they fell ill during a trip to the US state of California, which shares a border with Mexico. They returned home on 18 April.

The woman in the Paris region was also undergoing tests after showing flu-like symptoms, said Francoise Weber, director of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance.

Two other people tested negative in southwest France and in the southern city of Marseille as health authorities stepped up surveillance.

Spanish authorities said Sunday that seven people are being treated as possible swine flu cases, and all flights from Mexico are being checked, as fears grow over the spread of the killer virus.

The World Health Organization on Saturday declared a "public health emergency of international concern" and called on governments to step up surveillance of flu-like symptoms and severe pneumonia.
