Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio wins the 2008 Nobel Literature Prize.

9 October 2008

STOCKHOLM -- French author Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, who won the 2008 Nobel Literature Prize on Thursday, said he was very touched and honoured by the prestigious award.

"I am very moved, very touched. It's a great honour for me", he told Swedish public radio after the Swedish Academy announced this year's laureate.

"I'm sincerely grateful to the Nobel Academy", he added.

Le Clezio, 68, whose world travels influence the settings of his work, was praised by the Swedish Academy as an "authour of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilisation".

He will receive the Nobel diploma, medal and a cheque for SEK 10 million (EUR 1.02 million) at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on 10 December.

In 2007 the prize went to British writer Doris Lessing.
