28/01/2009France hands over wanted ETA suspect to Spain

France on Tuesday handed over to Spain an alleged member of the armed Basque separatist group ETA who faces possible terrorism charges in Madrid, interior ministry said.

MADRID - Spanish authorities will have custody of Gabriel Maria Saez Totoricaguena, who was detained in France in December 2001, for a period of six months, it said in a statement.

In 2007 French court sentenced the 47-year-old to 10 years in jail after finding him guilty of being responsible for ETA's "information structure" which is charged with preparing attacks, the Basque news agency Vaco Press reported.

In Spain he is suspected of having prepared a campaign of ETA attacks carried out between March and October 2000, Spanish media reported.

ETA, which is on the European Union's list of banned terrorist groups, has been blamed for the deaths of 825 people in a 40-year campaign for an independent Basque homeland straddling northern Spain and southwestern France.
