The father of a French lecturer who appeared in court in Tehran on Saturday alongside Iranians detained amid protests over June's presidential election said he was surprised to see her in the dock

Paris - The father of a French lecturer who appeared in court in Tehran on Saturday alongside Iranians detained amid protests over June's presidential election said he was surprised to see her in the dock.

"I had not been told. I was surprised to see her appear at this trial," Remi Reiss said, adding: "Obviously, I want to say again that she is innocent and that there is no proof of the accusations against her."

He added that he hoped the trial would "bring matters to a head."

Clotilde Reiss, who turned 24 in prison on 31 July, was arrested on 1 July as she tried to fly out of Iran after a study trip.

Initially she was accused of spying for taking a photograph of a demonstration in the central city of Isfahan over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election and emailing it to a French friend in Tehran.

But on Saturday the official IRNA news agency reported that she was accused of "collecting information and provoking rioters."

A diplomatic source also said that it was "surpising to know Reiss was in court."

"We only found out this morning on television. We hadn't been told," the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
