Victims who defend themselves no longer suspects

RNW

As of January, people who use violence to defend themselves against burglars or robbers will be treated more leniently by the police and the public prosecutors’ office.

They will no longer be immediately arrested and questioned as suspects, but instead will be allowed to assist the police in their inquiries at a different time. Deputy Justice Minister Fred Teeven will officially announce the change in policy on Monday at a concert dedicated to victims of violent crimes.

The different approach to self-defence had already been announced in the coalition agreement of the conservative VVD and the Christian Democratic CDA.
