Dutch government presents ambitious urban plans

5 September 2008

THE HAGUE — The government has unveiled plans for the construction of 500,000 new homes in the urban conglomeration known as the Randstad, in the west of the country.

The cabinet’s regional planning vision for 2040 includes plans for large parks in the style of New York’s Central Park or the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.

The homes would be largely high-rise, to leave more space for greenery in the cities.

The government’s proposals, which will be officially presented Friday, also include schemes to improve public transport and the road network.
