Roma travellers move on to Lommel

The Mayor of Landen earlier tried to eject the travellers by blasting loud rock music at them.

In the end the Roma made an agreement with the police and pledged they would vacate the site by this afternoon.

Over thirty caravans were parked on the illegal campsite in an industrial zone in Landen yesterday.

They are now expected to travel to Lommel in the course of the day.

The acting mayor of Lommel, Geert Janssen, says the news of the arrival of the Roma is merely a rumour: "No application has been made and Lommel does not possess a recognised site. It is hard to receive these people here because nobody is prepared. Everybody in the area has taken measures. In the event they do arrive we will take suitable measures to make the best of things."
