THE HAGUE – The court in The Hague sentenced businessman Frans van Anraat to 17 years in prison today for complicity in war crimes.
The court considered it demonstrated that Van Anraat had delivered large shipments of chemicals to Saddam Hussein's regime in the 1980s, knowing that Hussein's regime was using such substances to make chemical weapons.
Van Anraat was not found guilty of complicity in genocide however.
The sentence is harsher than that imposed earlier by a lower court. The lower court had sentenced Van Anraat to 15 years in prison in December 2005 for war crimes.
Both the justice department and the suspect had appealed the court ruling.
