AMSTERDAM – Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin is tightening up supervision on adoption. His decision comes in response to two investigations which showed that the monitoring of adoptions currently leaves much to be desired.
The studies criticised the government and Dutch adoption agency Meiling.
India says that one orphanage has arranged 350 illegal adoptions. Children were abducted or taken under false pretences. Fifty children were reportedly brought to the Netherlands.
Hirsch Ballin will step up the quality requirements for adoption agencies. He also wants closer contact with the countries from which the adoptive children come.
