6 June 2005

AMSTERDAM — Dutch singer René Froger has prostate cancer, but the illness has been detected in its early stages.

Froger's manager said on Monday the cancer was detected during a recent periodical medical examination.

He said the cancer is in its early stages and Froger will undergo surgery in the near future.

"René feels supported by his family and friends and looks to the operation with confidence," his manager said.

If prostate cancer is found early, while still confined to the gland itself, the chance that sufferers will survive is excellent

Prostate cancer has steadily become more common over the past few decades, mystifying doctors.

Symptoms may include the need to urinate more frequently, difficulty or pain when passing water or a feeling the bladder has not completely emptied.

In advanced prostate cancer, the following symptoms may occur: weight loss, bone pain, pain in the loins, pelvis or lower back and/or blood in the urine or semen.
