DIEMEN - The Health Insurance Board (CVZ) has advised Public Health Minister Ab Klink not to include the Gardasil vaccine against cervical cancer in the basic health insurance package. The board says that the effectiveness of this vaccine has not yet been adequately demonstrated. If it is found to be effective, it could better be included in the standard state vaccination programme.
The board announced this on Tuesday. If Klink agrees, the vaccine will not be covered by insurance. The vaccine, which costs EUR 375, protects against a number of strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). These strains are responsible for 50 to 70 percent of all cases of cervical cancer.
The board thinks that it could be a better idea to include the vaccine in a national vaccination programme, because reimbursing for the vaccine on an individual basis will not result in a high enough vaccination rate among the population.
The Public Health Council is currently looking into whether Gardasil should be included in the standard state vaccination programme.
