12/06/2007More flights from Schiphol

12 June 2007

AMSTERDAM - Schiphol will be permitted to operate an extra 50,000 flights this year. The airport has made agreements regarding this with the province, the surrounding municipalities and area residents.

Schiphol was in danger of exceeding the legal noise limits by the end of summer. This would have forced closure of the Buitenveldert runway.

The accord means that 480,000 flights will be allowed to take off and land at Schiphol each year until 2010.

The accord that has been reached is contained in a recommendation that will be sent to Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings and Parliament. Parliament will have to make a decision on the matter before the end of the year.
