17/03/2006Italian Minister 'got message' over Nazi jibe

23 March 2006

AMSTERDAM — Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said on Thursday Italian Minister Carlo Giovanardi has 'got the message' that it is unacceptable to compare legalised euthanasia in the Netherlands with Nazi eugenics.

Balkenende spoke about the comments made by Giovanardi last week when he had talks with Italian Prime Minister Silvio at a meeting of Christian Democrat leaders at Meise near Brussels. The two Christian Democrats are also in Belgium for an EU summit.

The Dutch Prime Minister said told Berlusconi "emphatically once more" that such comparisons were not on.

"We were in agreement about this. Berlusconi noted Giovanardi was speaking for himself and not for the Italian government," Balkenende said.

The Dutch Prime Minister said it was not necessary to seek a further apology from Giovanardi.

Giovanardi launched the outspoken attack on legalised  euthanasia in the Netherlands last Friday.

"Nazi legislation and Hitler's ideas are re-emerging in Europe via Dutch euthanasia laws and the debate on how to kill ill children," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Carlo Giovanardi said on an Italian radio programme.

He likened the Dutch legislation to Nazi laws and said it is "eugenics" to debate killing children "who are ill or have Downs Syndrome".

"We could just as easily apply this to senior citizens," Giovanardi said.

Giovanardi is a member of the centre-right Christian Democrat party in Italy.
