27 March 2007

AMSTERDAM – Liberal party the VVD wants to make deliberately working against integration a crime.

VVD MP Henk Kamp thinks that imams who get in the way of integration should be able to be punished with loss of the Dutch nationality. Mosques where they preach should also be shut down, Kamp said on current affairs programme Nova.

The MP's comments are in response to the conflict surrounding controversial Tilburg imam Ahmed Salam. The city's mayor Ruud Vreeman has told him that he does not belong in the Netherlands.

Salam reportedly called on Muslims to refuse to pay tax in order to "damage the Dutch state." He was in the news some time ago as well for refusing to shake the hand of Immigration and Integration minister at the time Rita Verdonk because she is a woman.
