07/03/2006Dutch step up swine fever watch

7 March 2006

AMSTERDAM - The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority is to examine all pigs coming from North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany where swine fever has been detected.

Agriculture Minister Cees Veerman announced the measure on Tuesday in a bid to prevent the infection spreading to Dutch farms.

Veerman ordered additional cleansing methods for livestock trucks moving pigs from Germany last week after the discovery of swine fever in the German region of Haltern. Further cases have been detected since then.

Dutch inspectors are also to check all Dutch farms that have taken in pigs from North-Rhine Westphalia in the last six weeks.

The impact of the new measures should not be significant for the Dutch agriculture sector as the Netherlands does not import many pigs from the German state.
