02/09/2005Dutch people sought after Katrina

2 September 2005

AMSTERDAM — The Foreign Ministry in The Hague has so far failed to make contact with six Dutch people in the New Orleans region.

The Ministry said on Thursday the six are "difficult to trace" but have not yet been listed as officially missing. Concerned family members and friends contacted the Ministry for help after Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans.

About 300 Dutch people live and work in greater New Orleans and a further 30 Dutch tourists and business people were in the area when the hurricane struck.

There have not been any reports so far of Dutch people being killed or injured in the disaster.

Foreign Minister Ben Bot sent a letter to his US counterpart Condoleezza Rice on Thursday to express the sympathy of the Dutch people for the victims of the hurricane. Queen Beatrix sent a similar message to US President George W. Bush.

Bot also indicated the Netherlands is ready to offer assistance if the US authorities require it. A team of dike inspectors is on standby to help Louisiana battle the flooding caused by broken levies.
