THE HAGUE (ANP) – In the Schilderswijk in The Hague disturbances occurred at the end of the multicultural festival Kaschba, according to a spokesperson for the police.

Youths started rioting in the vicinity of the Oranjestraat and the Koningstraat. Objects were flung at the police and one of the stages on which performances were taking place, was closed.

The atmosphere had been pleasant all day, but at the end of the day the fat was in the fire. As a preventive measure the police was already present. A unit of the riot police had to keep a group of youths in check. Around 9.00 p.m. all was quiet again in the neighbourhood.

According to a spokesperson for the foundation that organised the event, no damage was done to the booths or stages. "Order was restored very quickly," the spokesperson said.

The Kaschba event highlighted four cultures: the Afro-Caribbean, the Dutch, Hindu and Arab culture. During the day there were performances by the Surinamese band Booyaka!, Jan Keizer and K-liber4life. The event replaced the traditional HaSchiBa festival in the Schilderswijk. Kaschba is on a smaller-scale than its predecessor.
