31/05/2007Chief suspect in HIV case is nurse

31 May 2007

GRONINGEN – One of the main suspects in the deliberate cases of HIV infection in Groningen works as a nurse in a residential care centre in Sappemeer. The man also worked at the Blauwbörgje care centre in Groningen, according to broadcaster NOS.

Twelve men have reported to the regional health authority (GGD) in Groningen that they were possibly infected with HIV during gay parties in the city. The regional health authority cannot say whether the men have actually been infected.

The police announced yesterday that four men from Groningen and Slochteren had been arrested. Two of them have confessed to drugging men at gay parties and injecting them with HIV-infected blood. One of the other suspects reportedly supplied the drugs.

The GGD has set up a telephone number (050-3674080) for people with questions or concerns.
